How to Spot Quality Turf When Buying

Investing in quality turf pays off. Poor turf can lead to patchy establishment, disease and years of remedial work. Good turf establishes quickly, looks even and performs reliably. So what should you look for when buying?

County Turf has grown and supplied premium golf, sports and landscape turf since 1995. We are members of the Turfgrass Growers’ Association and supply TGA certified turf grown to strict criteria. Here’s what matters when choosing your supplier and your turf.

Freshness

Turf should be harvested and delivered as close as possible to laying. Check when it was cut and how it has been stored. Fresh turf is cool to the touch, evenly green and has a clean, grassy smell. Yellowing, heating or a sour smell suggests it has been stacked too long.

Consistency

Look for even colour and thickness across the roll. The sward should be dense and uniform, without bare patches, weeds or obvious disease. The soil base should be consistent in depth and texture.

Root development

Lift a corner of a roll—you should see a well-developed root system holding the soil together. Weak or sparse roots indicate poor growing conditions or stress.

Reputation and certification

Buy from a reputable grower. TGA certification indicates the turf has been produced to defined standards. Check reviews, ask for references and confirm the turf is suited to your site and intended use.

Quality turf, laid on well-prepared ground with good aftercare, gives you the best chance of a successful lawn from the start.
