Quality topsoil is the foundation of a successful lawn. Whether you’re laying new turf or improving existing ground, the right soil supports root development, drainage and long-term health. Choosing suitable topsoil and applying it correctly can make the difference between a lawn that struggles and one that thrives.
County Turf supplies golf, sports and landscape turf to projects across the UK and Europe. The venues we supply often use carefully specified rootzones and topsoils to achieve the best playing surfaces. For domestic and landscaping projects, these principles still apply.
Good turf topsoil should be free-draining yet able to retain moisture for root access. It should be free from stones, roots, rubble and weeds. A crumbly, friable texture that breaks apart easily is ideal—avoid heavy, sticky clay or very loose, dusty sand.
For turf-specific applications, look for topsoil suitable for lawns: often a loam or sandy loam that has been screened and meets recognised standards where applicable. Blended or enriched topsoils can improve nutrient levels and structure on difficult sites.
Calculate the area in square metres and multiply by the depth in metres. For example, 50m² at 100mm depth needs 5 cubic metres. It’s better to order slightly more than you think, to allow for levelling and settling. Spread the topsoil evenly and consolidate lightly before laying turf.
Incorporating a pre-turfing fertiliser into the top layer gives new turf a strong start. Level the surface carefully to avoid dips and hollows that can hold water or cause uneven growth.
Investing in suitable topsoil and good preparation will pay dividends for years to come.
